In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Shamblehurst like this:
SHAMBLEHURST, a tything in South Stoneham parish, Hants; 4¼ miles N E of Southampton. Real property, £8,031. Pop. in 1851, 1, 503; in 1861, 1, 754. Houses, 333. The Stoneham workhouse is here; and, at the census of 1861, had 168 inmates.
