In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Whitley like this:
Whitley, vil., Coventry St Michael par., Warwickshire, on river Avon, 2 miles SE. of Coventry. At Whitley Abbey, a seat in vicinity, Charles I. resided for a few days in 1642. The Avon is here crossed by Whitley Bridge.
