In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Hammerwood like this:

Hammerwood, eccl. dist., East Grinstead par., E. Sussex, pop. 425; contains Hammerwood Lodge, seat, 3 miles E. of East Grinstead, and surrounded by a fine park.
