Descriptive Gazetteer Entry for BUDE CANAL

BUDE CANAL, a canal of Cornwall and Devon. It commences at Bude; goes eastward past Marham, Pancraswick, and Holsworthy, to Thornbury; and sends a branch southward, down the Tamar, and into that river, toward Launceston. It was formed in 1826, at a cost of £128,000; and it affords communication to the aggregate extent of nearly 40 miles. Seven inclined planes on it, worked by curious machinery, serve as substitutes for locks. An act was obtained in 1865 for making a railway from it, 2¾ miles long, at Werrington, to the Launceston and South Devon railway.
