Full Description:

The Registration districts were based on Poor Law Unions and were created from 1837 onwards. The Registration Districts were divided into Sub-Districts which each had a registrar responsible for the registration of all births and deaths. "After the 1888 and 1894 Acts the problems with Registration Districts overlapping administrative county boundaries and the increasing need for statistics at Local Government District level meant that Registration Districts were used less often. The census stopped using Registration Districts as its primary reporting units after 1911, preferring the Local Government District in stead"(Gregory, p.61). The Registration Districts themselves were abolished in 1930.
