In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Hartland like this:
Hartland, par. and vil., N. Devon, on S. side of Barnstaple Bay, 13½ miles SW. of Bideford, 16,700 ac., pop. 1884; P.O., T.O.; in vicinity is the seat of Hartland Abbey.
