In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Monasteranenagh like this:
Monasteranenagh, par., mid. co. Limerick, on river Commogue, 2 miles E. of Groom, 7618 ac., pop. 1158; contains Monaster. (P.O.), the seat of Monaster House, and the ruin of Abbey of Monasteranenagh.
