In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Furness Abbey like this:
Furness Abbey (1128), with ry. sta., 1 mile S. of Dalton, N. Lancashire; P.O.; the ruins, comprising the church walls, chapter house, refectory, and guest hall, evidence the former magnificence of the structure.
