In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Scandale like this:
SCANDALE BECK, a streamlet in the W of Westmoreland; rising between Rydal Head and the Red Screes; running 4 miles south-south-westward to the Rothay, in the W vicinity of Ambleside; traversing aravine down the long southern offshoot of Fairfield; and making some pretty cascades.
