In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Salen like this:

Salen.-- quoad sacra par. and vil., Kilninian and Kilmore, and Torosay pars., Argyllshire, on E. side of Mull island - quoad sacra par., pop. 600; vil., on Sound of Mull, 20 miles NW. of Oban.
