Ecclefechan  Dumfries Shire


In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Ecclefechan like this:

Ecclefechan, vil. with ry. sta., Hoddom par., Dumfries, 5¾ m. SE. of Lockerbie, 20 NW. of Carlisle, and 81 SW. of Edinburgh, pop. 768; P.O., T.O., 1 Bank; the birthplace and burial-place of Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881).
