In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Crinan like this:

Crinan, or Port Crinan, vil., with hotel, near W. end of Crinan Canal, Argyllshire, 5½ miles NW. of Lochgilphead; P.O., T.O., called Crinan Pier.
