In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Galloway like this:

Galloway, ancient dist. in SW. of Scotland; it comprised the cos. of Kirkcudbright and Wigtown, and was divided into Upper Galloway in the N., Lower Galloway in the S., and the Rhinns of Galloway in the W.
