In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Gairloch like this:

Gairloch, par. and vil., W. Ross-shire -- par., 200,646 ac., pop. 4594; vil., with steamboat pier and hotel, at bead of Gair Loch, 28 miles NW. of Achnasheen sta.; P.O., T.O., 1 Bank.
