In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Balfron like this:

Balfron, par. and vil., W. Stirlingshire, 20 miles SW. of Stirling by rail, 7820 ac., pop. 1327; vil., pop. 970; P.O., T.O., 1 Bank. The vil. is 1¾ mile E. of the ry. sta.; cotton-spinning is carried on.
