In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described New Luce like this:

Luce, New, par. and vil. with ry. sta., Wigtownshire - par., 28,877 ac., pop. 706; vil., at the confluence of the two headstreams of the Water of Luce, 5 miles NW. of Glenluce, pop. 320; P.O.
