In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Cleish like this:
Cleish, par. and vil. (ry. sta. Cleish Road), in co. and 2 miles SE. of Kinross, 6201 ac., pop. 498; P.O.; contains Cleish Hills (1241 ft.) and Cleish Castle, seat.
