In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Crathie like this:
Crathie and Braemar, united par., W. Aberdeenshire, 182,257 ac., pop. 1611; contains some of the loftiest mountains in Scotland, also the vils. of Crathie and Castle ton of Braemar, and Balmoral Castle, the Highland residence of Queen Victoria.
