In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Throapham like this:

Throapham St John (or St John with Throapham), township, Laughton en le Morthen par., S. div. West-Riding Yorkshire, 6½ miles SW. of Tickhill, 1062 ac., pop. 96.
