In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Littlethorpe like this:
LITTLETHORPE, a village in Whitcliffe-with-Thorpe township, Ripon parish, W. R. Yorkshire; on the river Ure, 1¼ mile SSE of Ripon. The making of bricks and tiles is largely carried on.
