Table ID:
MORT_REG_EW     (61498)
Contents:
Annual cause-of-death Statistics for Registration Districts in England and Wales, 1851-1910.
Approx. number of rows:
3,052
Table type:
Raw Data
Documentation Author:
Paul Ell
Geography:
Reporting units are identified by:
   Registration County
   Registration District
   Registration District Number
   Suffix to Registration District Number
Chronology:
The data cover the period 1881 to 1911.
Dates and times are identified by:
   Year

Sources:

  1. These data were transcribed from the Annual Reports of the Registrar General. The full report title for 1901, for example, is 'Sixty-Fourth Annual Report of the Registrar-General of Births, Deaths, and Marriages in England and Wales 1901.' This title is typical.
  2. These data cover England and Wales only.
  3. The printed table includes occasional notes on changes in registration district boundaries. These have not been computerised.
  4. CDDA digitised data represents a full computerisation of the numeric data contained in the printed table.

Notes:

  1. The London data were added to the database as an aspect of our construction of a more detailed London GIS for the CMH project 'Death in the Metropolis, 1860-1920'.
  2. Remaining data were digitised by the Centre for Data Digitisation and Analysis at the Queen's University of Belfast.
  3. Data for London are available annually from 1860 to 1910. Data for the remainder of England and Wales are only available for 1861, 1871, 1881, 1891, and 1901.
  4. The categories of mortality used by the Registrar General varied over the period covered, hence the columns containing actual data vary substantially according to the year of the report. Care should be taken to distinguish zero and null values. For details of the periods covered by each cause, see the notes on individual columns.
  5. Where possible, Graham Mooney attempted to combine causes which were in fact identical despite a change in name (e.g. Scarlatina and Scarlet Fever) CDDA followed the same approach.
  6. The original tables included neither the total population, which must be inserted from census statistics, or the total number of deaths.

Checking:

  1. London data unknown; check with Graham Mooney. Data digitised by CDDA were checked by summing each cause of death (including 'All other causes' and comparing the figure with the total given for each district. It was not possible to check the 'Inquests' column and hence this was checked by sight.
  2. No matching to the AUO gazetteer has been attempted. These files have been altered to run on Postgres, but otherwise are exactly the same as they were on the oracle server. N.B. The London data does not load as there is an extra figure in the row for Kensington 1881, key 683. The original is required to identify the error.

Acknowledgments:

We are extremely grateful to the following:

  1. Graham Mooney: The data for London Registration Districts for ALL years were supplied to the database by Graham Mooney. No limits have been placed on access.
