Sources:

  1. All data are taken from the series of datasets titled "Deaths Registered by Area of Usual Residence, UK", downloaded from https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/birthsdeathsandmarriages/deaths/datasets/deathsregisteredbyareaofusualresidenceenglandandwales on 22nd January 2017. On that date the most recent year covered was 2014. However, the exact source varies between years:
    • 2009: For this year, the download is a zip archive containing multiple "tables" which are Excel files. These data are taken from Table 5, which is a workbook with sheets for different regions, but identical columns for each. Similar data are available for earlier years but with a slightly different local government geography.
    • 2010-13: Downloads for these years are a single workbook, and in each case the data are taken from Table 2 within the workbook.
    • 2014: For this year the data again come from Table 2, but it provides data for all 5 year bands, rather than simplifying most bands to cover 10 years. Given that only one year was like this, the data held here for 2014 have been simplified in the same way. However, this was done after the full set of 2014 data had been loaded into a temporary table in the database, so it would be simple to make the full set available.


Notes:

  1. This table contains data for districts, Unitary Authorities, counties, regions and nations. All rows have been matched to the AUO except for:
    • Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly are always treated as a single district, on the grounds that the Isles of Scilly have too little data to be separately reported. This merged unit does not exist in the AUO, so g_unit is null. However, matching on name has been used to add births data for this unit.
    • In 2010-12 inclusive, Hackney and the City of London are similarly reported as a single unit, which cannot be assigned a g_unit values, but which has had births data added by name matching. In 2013, they are listed separately in the mortality table, but are still merged in the births table so they lack births data for that year, In 2014, they are listed separately in both tables.
    • The table as a whole reports persons dying based on where they were unsually resident, and consequently includes rows labelled as "ENGLAND, WALES AND ELSEWHERE" or "Usual residence outside England and Wales", which cannot be given a g_unit value.
    • In 2009 and 2010, the table includes data for various former districts which were replaced by unitary authorities and which did not exist at the time of the 2011 census; the listings also include the unitary authorities which replaced them. These districts have g_unit_type="Former", and have not been matched to the AUO.

area_name Text string (max.len.=46). Name of the area as it appeared in the original table. Includes "UA" at the end for unitary authorities.
g_unit_type Text string (max.len.=12). Unit type ID from the AUO, added manually by us before loading, i.e. MOD_DIST, MOD_CNTY, MOD_REG or COUNTRY. 'Former' also appears here to identify rows for former districts listed in 2009 and 2010. In the original listings, the types of units were indicated by capitalisation, emboldening and, for "former" units, italicisation.
g_unit Integer number. Unique ID number for the unit from the AUO gazetteer.
m_tot Integer number. Total number of deaths of males.
f_tot Integer number. Total number of deaths of females.
m_0 Integer number. Number of deaths of males aged under 1.
f_0 Integer number. Number of deaths of females aged under 1.
