Notes:

  1. The Registrar General's Decennial Supplement for 1871-80 did not break down the tables for the individual Registration Districts by sex, hence the raw data cannot be included in the 'mort_age' table.
  2. Despite careful checking, the computed and printed totals for two counties did not match: Firstly, Surrey, where the computed total was larger than the printed one by 2. Secondly, Sussex, where it was smaller by 4. With these exceptions, the data should be substantially free from transcription errors.
  3. In places where RDs had been created or abolished during the period, the 1871-80 report usually provided multiple tables each covering part of the period. For example, if an RD was subdivided in 1875, there would be one table covering the RD as a whole for 1871-5, and two others each covering 1875-80. Where an RD was abolished during the period, it would be listed but without a number; in the dataset, this was dealt with by using the num_sfx column: values of '1' and '2' in this did not appear in the original, but were added during transcription to cover these cases; without this field, combinations of 'reg_num', 'reg_dist' and 'reg_cnty' will not be unique. This is all explained in the 'notes' field. NB in some cases the marriage total covered a different period than the births and deaths data, but this does not matter as the marriage data was not transcribed.


Checking:

  1. That deaths of children aged under 5 by individual year equalled the total for the age group.
  2. That deaths of persons by five- or ten-year bands equalled the total number of deaths.
  3. It was not possible to provide a check sum for the number of births in each individual union, but the computed total of births for each county was compared with county totals listed earlier in the report.
  4. No matching to the AUO gazetteer has been attempted. These files have been altered to run on Postgres, but otherwise are exactly the same as they were on the oracle server.
