Sources:

  1. These data were originally created by Allan Baker of the Office of National Statistics who assigned each individual death to a 2001 ward based on the postcodes included in the death records. They formed the basis for the research published in Norman P, Gregory I, Dorling D & Baker A (2008) "Geographical trends in infant mortality: England and Wales, 1970?2006" Health Statistics Quarterly 40: 18-29. They were obtained from Paul Norman at the University of Leeds on 16th January 2017 in spreadsheet format by Humphrey Southall, replacing an earlier dataset covering fewer years obtained in April 2016.

Notes:

  1. The data set contains no data for 1973 to 1978 inclusive.
  2. In order to match the IDs used in our version of the 2001 CAS ward polygons, gis_gb2001_ward, the values of ward_code have been modified for two local authorities:
    • The first four characters of the wards of Bedford have been changed from 09UD to 00KB.
    • The first four characters of the wards of the Scilly Isles have been changed from 15UH to 00HF.
Following these changes, every value of ward_code in this data set has a match in the polygon dataset.
