The data cover the period 1881 to 1911.

Sources:

1. The data were extracted from Table 58 in the 1991 Small Areas Statistics, 'Household space type; tenure and amenities', using the CASWEB system, on 17th January 2016. The Scottish data were extracted separately from the England and Wales data due to (a) their being for Output Areas rather than Enumeration District and (b) the tables having slightly different structures. However, the particular variables included here are identical for England and Wales and for Scotland.

1. The source table provides a detailed breakdown of types of 'Household spaces' within the 'permanent buildings' category, such as 'Purpose built flat', but only the 'non-permanent' category has been extracted for now, enabling caravans to be excluded.
