This section contains information on place of birth as recorded by the census. The first census to gather this information was that for 1841, but the information was limited to whether born in the same county, a different county, in another part of Britain, or abroad. Our transcriptions begin in 1851, and from then on the information gathered was place and county of birth. Most of the tables held here are limited to just the county of birth. The most recent tables identify sub-continent and country rather than place and county. Note that as an aspect of research using the database, we have studied migration by a quite different route, applying a cohort survival technique to the age-sex tables. No work has been done to match the units to the AUO.
