STOKE (East), a parish in Southwell district, Notts; on the river Trent, 2 miles S by E of Fiskerton r. station, and 4 SW of Newark. It includes Elston chapelry; and its Post town is Newark. Acres, exclusive of Elston, 1,730. Real property, £4,898. Pop., 490. Houses, 107. The property is divided among a few. S. Hall is the seat of Sir H. Bromley, Bart. S. Field was the scene of Henry VII.'s defeat of Simnel. The living is a vicarage, with the chapelries of Elston and Syerston, in the diocese of Lincoln. Value, £375.* Patron, the Bishop of L. The chancel and tower of the church are ancient, but the body of it is of modern date. An hospital was founded here before the time of Henry I.
