LOSELEY, a demesne in Guildford-St. Nicholas parish, Surrey; 2 miles SW of Guildford. It belonged anciently to Edward the Confessor, Roger Montgomery, and others; was purchased, early in the reign of Henry VIII., by Sir Christopher More; went by marriage, about 1692, to the Molyneuxes; and belongs now to James More Molyneux, Esq. The mansion on it was built, about 1562, by Sir William More; acquired, in the time of the next owner, t.gallery 121 feet long and a chapel, both of which were taken down since the commencement of the present century; contains a muniment room, which was closed for upwards of 200 years, and was afterwards found to contain a valuable collection of manuscripts, subsequently printed and published; includes a hall 42 feet long and 25 feet wide, containing many interesting portraits and curiosities; and was visited by Queen Elizabeth, James I., and Anne of Denmark. The grounds comprise about 180 acres, and present charming features of wood and contour.
