Descriptive Gazetteer Entry for Sheppey, Isle of

Sheppey, Isle of, island, off N. coast of Kent, at mouth of river Thames, separated from the mainland by the Swale and by the estuary of the Medway, 22,451 ac., 897 tidal water and 6502 foreshore, pop. 18,204. Sheppey is 9 miles long and 5 broad; it contains 7 pars. (2 of which, Harty and Elmley, are themselves islands) and the town of Sheerness. The surface gradually rises from the marshes of the S. towards the N., where the cliffs are from 60 to 80 ft. high. The whole island is composed of London clay, and the soil is rich and fertile. Cereals are grown on the higher lands, while the lower lands have long been famous for the breeding and fattening of sheep. Minster Abbey Church was one of the three earliest churches of the Saxons.
