Descriptive Gazetteer Entry for Andover

Andover, mun. bor. and par., Hants, on river Anton, 16 miles NE. of Salisbury and 67 miles SW. of London by rail, 8662 ac., pop. 5653; 2 Banks, 2 newspapers. Market-day, Friday. The town received its first charter from King John. Malting, tanning, silk mfr., and timber traffic are the chief occupations. It is the centre of an important agricultural district. The market is for corn; horse and sheep fairs are held. Andover returned 1 member to Parliament until 1885.
