Descriptive Gazetteer Entry for Mauchline

Mauchline, small town and par. with ry. sta., Ayrshire - par., 8907 ac., pop. 2504; town, 9½ miles SE. of Kilmarnock, pop. 1616; P.O., T.O., 1 Bank. Mauchline has relics of a priory. It has long been noted as a market for cattle and horses, and it has extensive mfrs. of snuff-boxes, &c., in white-varnished or tartan-painted wood. Mauchline is intimately associated with the name of the poet Burns; it is the scene of his Holy Fair and Jolly Beggars.
