Erith, town and par. with ry. sta., W. Kent, on river Thames, 4½ miles E. of Woolwich and 14 miles E. of London, 3860 ac. and 753 tidal water and foreshore, pop. 9812; P.O., T.O., 1 Bank. Erith is a summer resort; it is a steamboat station, and a rendezvous of various yacht clubs. Public pleasure-grounds skirt the river, and on the wooded banks are many fine villas. In vicinity are factories; also brickfields and ironworks. In Erith church Hubert de Burgh met the Barons after the signing of Magna Charta; Henry VIII.'s ship, the "Grace de Dieu, " was built at Erith in 1515.
