Descriptive Gazetteer Entry for Nithsdale

Nithsdale, the western one of the 3 divisions of Dumfriesshire drained by the river Nith; was anciently called Stranith or Strathnith, and gave the title of earl (1620-1716) to the family of Maxwell.
