Descriptive Gazetteer Entry for Avon, or Lower Avon

Avon, or Lower Avon, river, Gloucestershire, Wilts, and Somerset; it rises near Tetbury, on SE. border of Gloucestershire, and flows through the above cos. and past Bristol to the Bristol Channel at King's Road. It is 75 miles long, and is navigable to Bristol (8 miles) for large vessels, and to Bath (12 miles) for vessels of small draught. It is noted for its high tides -- spring tides often reaching 40 ft.
