Lovat, a place in Kirkhill parish, Inverness-shire, on the right bank of the river Beauly, opposite Beauly town, and 1¼ mile W by S of Clunes station. Here stood the baronial fortalice of Lovat, founded in 1230 by the Bissets, and conferred by James I. on Hugh Fraser, first Lord Lovat-a title attainted in 1747 and restored in 1857. (See Beaufort Castle.) Lovat Bridge, across the river Beauly , 1¾ mile WSW, was erected in 1810 at a cost of nearly £10, 000, and is a fine arched structure, with a waterway of 240 feet.—Ord.
