Descriptive Gazetteer Entry for Forbes

Forbes, a hamlet and an ancient parish in Aberdeenshire. The hamlet lies on the left bank of the river Don, at the Bridge of Alford, 1¾ mile WNW of Alford village, and has a good inn, the Forbes Arms, and a post office under Aberdeen. The parish was annexed in 1722 to Kearn, from which it is separated by a range of hills; and has, since 1808, been united to Tullynessle. It has belonged, from the 13th century, to the noble family of Forbes of Castle Forbes.—Ord. Sur., sh. 76, 1874.
