Variable : 1931 Occupational Classification

Variables serve as the dimensions of nCubes, and are generally based on the questions on forms such as the census schedule. However, in the aggregate data held in the Vision of Britain system we do not store the individual responses but counts of the number of each kind of response, so variables are made up of categories, such as age groups.

Identifier:
V_OCC_ORD1931
Name:
1931 Occupational Classification
Type:
Variable (V)
Text:
This system of occupational oders was used by the 1931 Census of Population. It is almost but not identical to the system used in 1921, the difference being that (a) in 1931, 'Printers and photographers' were a separate Order XVII, while in 1921 they formed part of Order XVI, 'Paper and Printing'; and (b) in 1921, 'Gas, Water and Electricity' was a separate Order XXI, while in 1931, for example, gas workers were included in Order IV. Because of these differences, the other orders between XVII and XXII have different numbers in the two years. Unlike 1921, the full list of orders was used only in reporting data for counties and large towns.
