Variable : Agricultural Census Pig Categories for 1940-41

Variables serve as the dimensions of nCubes, and are generally based on the questions on forms such as the census schedule. However, in the aggregate data held in the Vision of Britain system we do not store the individual responses but counts of the number of each kind of response, so variables are made up of categories, such as age groups.

Agricultural Census Pig Categories for 1940-41
Variable (V)
These categories were used in the Agricultural Census reports for the early 1940s and again in 1960 through 1971. Different system were used in 1930, and reports for the late 1930s have not been checked. The 1950 report uses the same categories as 1940 and 1960, except that 'Young boars being reared for service' are also identified. We need to check the other years in which this category appears. The Scottish report for 1961 also uses this system, although 'Barren sows for fattening' becomes simply 'Other Sows: For fattening'.
