Categories are the components of variables, so if a variable measures age then the categories are the age groups used, such as '10 to 14'.

Houses with Gardens
Category (C)
Gardens, allotments, nurseries, etc. This category covers the less densely occupied parts of towns and villages, the instructions saying 'Houses with gardens sufficiently large to grow a few vegetables or even flowers should be marked G (garden) since the area is productive. Backyards and other areas agriculturally unproductive should, however, be marked W. Allotments are merely gardens at a distance from the house.' These areas were coloured dark purple on the published maps.
