Variable : 1841 Irish Occupational Categories

Variables serve as the dimensions of nCubes, and are generally based on the questions on forms such as the census schedule. However, in the aggregate data held in the Vision of Britain system we do not store the individual responses but counts of the number of each kind of response, so variables are made up of categories, such as age groups.

Variable (V)
Text:
This set of nine categories was used in the "General Tables" which presented the main results from the 1841 and 1851 Censuses of Ireland. The Census Commissioners in 1841 justified this classification as follows: "After the fullest consideration we found no classification of persons less objectionable than one which, reverting to the first elements of society, considered every individual as dependent on the mode in which he serves his fellows, or, in other words, as he could minister to the physical or moral wants of others. Thus traders in or manufacturers of food minister to hunger; of clothing, to nakedness; of lodging, &c., to exposure; and of medicine to sickness." The first five categories were grouped as "Ministering to Physical Wants", while Justice, Education and Religion ministered to "Moral Wants".
