In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Nettlestead like this:
NETTLESTEAD, a parish in Bosmere district, Suffolk; 2½ miles W of Claydon r. station, and 5¾ N W of Ipswich. Post-town, Ipswich. Acres, 1,028. Real property, £1, 508. Pop., 105. Houses, 21. The property is divided among a few. The manor belonged to the Earls of Richmond; passed to Peter de Savoy, the Tiptofts, the Despencers, and the Wentworths; and gaveto the last the title of Baron. ...
Nettlestead Hall was themanor-house; retains an ancient gateway, bearing the arms of the Wentworths; and is now a farm-house. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Norwich. Value, £196. Patron, the Rev. J. Jackson. The church is good; and contains a handsome monument of Mr. S. Sayer, of the time of Charles I. Boyse, one of the translators of the Bible, was a native.
