ELMSWELL, a parish in Stow district, Suffolk; on the Eastern Union railway, 6 miles NW of Stowmarket. It has a station on the railway, and a post office under Bury-St. Edmunds. Acres, 2, 066. Real property, £4, 071. Pop., 759. Houses, 169. The property is much subdivided. A residence of the abbots of Bury was here. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Ely. Value, £430.* Patron, W. Luke, Esq. The church is ancient; has a lofty tower; commands a fine view; and contains an effigies of Sir R. Gardner. There are a Wesleyan chapel, and charities £126.
