In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Newton St Cyres like this:

NEWTON-ST. CYRES, a village and a parish in Crediton district, Devon. The village stands on the river Creedy, adjacent to the Exeter and North Devon railway, 4½ miles N W of Exeter; contains several genteel residences; and has a station on the railway, a post-office under Exeter, and a fair on the Monday before Mid-summer day. ...


The parish includes the tythings of Ford, Norton, and Smallbrook. Acres, with Sherwood-Villa extra-parochial tract, 4, 305. Real property of N., St. C.alone, £7, 679. Pop., 1,083. Houses, 239. The property is divided among a few. The manor belonged once to Plympton priory; and has belonged, since the time of Elizabeth, to the family of Quicke. Newton House is the manorial mansion. A mansion of the Northcote family also was in the parish, but is now a farm-house. Ores of iron, lead, and manganese exist; and several mines were formerly worked. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Exeter. Value, £351.* Patron, J. Quicke, Esq. The church stands on an eminence, commanding fine views; was built about the13th century, and restored in 1831; and contains monuments of the Northcotes, the Quickes, and others. There are a national school, and charities £8.
