SEND, a village and a parish in Guild ford district, Surrey. The village stands on the river Wey, 3 miles S by E of Woking r. station, and 3½ N N E of Guild ford; and has a post-office under Woking Station. The parish includes the chapelry of Ripley, and comprises 5, 162 acres. Real property, £8, 603. ...
Pop. in 1851, 1, 555; in 1861, 1, 743. Houses, 339. The property is much sub-divided. The manors belong to Earl Onslow. S. Grovebelongs to Sir T. F. E. Drake, Bart.; S. Holme, to W. Hargreaves, Esq.; Sendhurst Grange, to the Hon. F. Scott; Woodhill, to H. Wood, Esq. Newark priory stoodat Aldebury; was founded in the time of Richard I.; and is now represented only by part of its church. The living is a vicarage, united with Ripley, in the diocese of Winchester. Value, £260.* Patron, Earl Onslow. The church is later English and good. There are a national school, and charities £6.
