In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Grwynefechan like this:

GRWYNE-FAWR and GRWYNE-FECHAN, two hamlets in Talgarth parish, Brecon; on two affluents of the river Usk, under the Black mountains, 3 miles NE of Talgarth. Acres, 4, 900. Pop., 19 and 87. house, 3 and 14.
