In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Charney Bassett like this:
CHARNEY, a chapelry in Longworth parish, Berks; on the river Ock, 3 miles NE by N of Faringdon Road r. station, and 4½ NNW of Wantage. Post Town, Longworth, under Faringdon. Acres, 1,220. Real property, £1,946. Pop., 241. Houses, 53. The property is divided among a few. The living is a vicarage, annexed to the rectory of Longworth, in the diocese of Oxford. The church has a Norman doorway, and is good.
