A vision of Britain from 1801 to now.
Including maps, statistical trends and historical descriptions.
In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Stroma like this:
Stroma, island, Canisbay par., Caithness, in the Pentland Firth, 3½ miles NW. of Duncansbay Head, pop. 341; P.O.; measures about 7 miles in circuit.
This is the only descriptive gazetter entry we have found, but you may be able to find further references to Stroma by doing a full-text search here.
This website includes the complete texts of books describing journeys around Britain, written between the twelfth and nineteenth centuries. Selecting one of the links below will take you to the first reference to Stroma within the selected text. This will not always be a description of a visit: travellers often mention places other than where they are, for example as a basis for comparison.
Traveller | Section | No. of Refs. | Thomas Pennant | August 18-29: Sutherland and Caithness | 2 | Thomas Pennant | Appendix V: Of Caithness, Strathnavern, and Sutherland | 1 | Thomas Pennant | Appendix VIII: Itinerary | 1 |
