In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Sheriffmuir like this:

Sheriffmuir, battlefield, in par., and 2 miles E. of Dunblane, Perthshire; an indecisive battle was fought here in 1715 between the forces of the Pretender under the Earl of Mar and the royalists under the Duke of Argyll.
