In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Barnsdale like this:
BARNSDALE, a hamlet in the township and parish of Campsall, W. R. Yorkshire; 6½ miles N of Doncaster. Barnsdale forest adjacent was the haunt of Robin Hood, and is noted in old song as the scene of his curious adventure with the Bishop of Hereford.
Then Robin he took the bishop by the hand,
And led him to merry Barnsdale;
He made him to stay and sup with him that night,
And to drink wine, beer, and ale.
