In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Bromley Common like this:

BROMLEY-COMMON, a chapelry in Bromley parish, Kent; 3 miles from Bromley town and r. station. It was constituted in 1843; and has a post office under Bromley. Pop., 1,163. Houses, 237. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Canterbury. Value, £132.* Patron, the Bishop of Worcester. The church was built in 1841, and is a handsome edifice in the Gothic style.
